という有名な言葉を残した。彼は日本に並々ならぬ興味を持ち、イスラエルの遺跡よりも日本の九州にある古代の神話の地にこそ興奮を覚えたことを記している。

政治学者Samuel Phillips Huntingtonは、『The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order』の中で、日本は、アジア文明圏にあるのではなく、特殊で孤立したJapanese civilizationであると論じた。

日本神話においては、国生み神話に代表される、この世の始まりの物語が説かれている。それはギリシャ神話とも類似性が指摘され、ある種の神話類型に分類できなくもない。しかし実際に日本に暮らしてみれば、これらの日本神話～古事記や日本書紀に代表されるような～が、実際の日本の宗教観を適切に表現したものではないと判るだろう。
